For those of us that reside on the 'burbs side of the mountain, we occasionally feel cheated of the abundant trendy little bistros and food-stops that one stumbles into so frequently in town. While I love the picket-fence-school-bell atmosphere, I do often catch the city-bowl-itis and drive into town just for the sake of seeing and doing something different - and perhaps being in a place where the average customer does not tick either the "soccer mom" or "geriatric" box. Luckily though, as the Mother City does, the Southern Suburbs are rejuvenating and thanks to places like The Kitchen, The Bromwell and The Old Biscuit Mill (which started it all), what was industrial Woodstock/Salt River (I'm never really sure of the

Cape Town Cocktails

The recent heat has harnessed all sorts of memories of vacation and laid-back laziness, and for those of us resenting nine-to-fives, we need to snatch up snippets of holiday time where we can. So in the city where the sun is setting at around 8PM, what better way to surrender the day than with sundowners? After hours of "dedicated research" (courtesy of Boozy-Floozy's-R-US)- a (subjective) compilation of Cape Town's best cocktails...    1. The wild berry brumble at Beluga. Vodka, vanilla, sirop de gomme, berries and lime muddled over crushed ice and served on Sundays at half-price with half-price, prime sushi, in Beluga's upmarket but comfortable venue. 2. The mojito slush. It's

Out of Town

A weekend away, Darling?

This weekend, the charming Darling of the Western Cape, snatches up the last fleeting moments of ripening weather, to bring us the Darling Music Experience. The donkey-drawn-carriage streets, in amongst swells of Darling vineyards, will be awash with merriment and music from Thursday 'til Sunday. Thursday 11th features concert pianists, while Friday 12th promises wine estate choir performances and rising stars of the Artscape National Youth Music Competition. Saturday the 13th brings a street-side screening of the documentary "El Systema" - documenting the efforts of Evita se Perron. This is followed up with a wicked wine and food paired luncheon, wine-tasting, a musical rally for kids and a duel between dynamic

Bizerca Bistro

For those of you that haven't yet - GO. I was out on a first dinner date, expecting the discomfort of a swanky place and what I got instead was Bizerca - in the words of Deslandes himself, "It’s not fancy French dining, which can be stuffy and intimidating, but true bistro style, which is relaxed without compromising on quality". Award-winning Australian chef Laurent Deslandes. Although it should go without saying, it seldom is the case that a restaurant's real show-stopper is what it serves - but such can be said of Bizerca. really was the food. Bizerca, encapsulates what a fine dining experience should be - An EXPERIENCE. The set menu changes bi-monthly, while a chalkboard denotes the delicacies of the

Fifa Fever at iArt Gallery

psoter

For those of you who were at Friday night's big draw, you are well-versed in that sky-high, tangible hum that has hit the city since. Big banners screaming "Cape Town is Ready" and soccer themed street art, that seemed like cheesy overkill last week, have somehow become resonating illustrations of the South African cultural climate this week. In the spirit of Fifa Fever, iArt Gallery has collaborated with South African publishing powerhouse - David Krut - to bring an inspired exhibition of the Official Art Posters for 2010.  The artist line-up includes big names like William Kentridge and Marlene Dumas, doing their part for the love of the game. This exhibition is only on for another two days (until the
