Infecting the city

Photography by Yasser Booley

If you missed the memo, on why there are pink people peculiarly standing in Greenmarket Square, or why semi-nude men seem to be emerging from Adderley Street fountains, the answer is simple - they're Infecting The City. Spier Performing Arts Festival: Infecting The City, is one Cape Town's most celebrated cultural events - a pioneer festival, showcasing performance artworks that interpret the city, within the city. Infecting The City has turned Cape Town's communal spaces into an urban performance arena. The works are performed at given times, in the open air, below the proscenium arch of the sky, and to stage left and right of traffic. Sponsored by Spier Wine Estate, Infecting the City creates a tangible hype and

Oude Libertas Outdoor Concerts

oude

In full swing of the summer season everyone is embracing the AL fresco (and lustfully absorbing the memory for the months of winter that will come before we know it). Every year, Oude Libertas brings an array of artists to soothe those lazing in the sun. Situated on the slopes, Oude Libertas' amphitheatre captures a postcard view of the Stellenbosch mountain range. This year, Oude Libertas again presents a "picnics welcome" line-up of diverse South African acts, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo and The Black Tie ensemble. If you want to sink into the warmth of the Cape mountains, this is the way: wicker baskets, wine and "whine" ;)

Antony and Cleopatra at Maynardville

antonyCLEO

What sounds more deliciously cultured than picnics and Shakespeare in the park? In a tradition that has truly stood the test of time, Antony and Cleopatra is Maynardville's 55th annual open-air Shakespeare. This drama of lust and politics is considered one of Shakespeare's most provocative and indulgent works and, despite their contextual grandeur, Shakespeare sensitively reduces them to flawed, mortal lovers of wanting contradiction. Written at the height of his literary capacity, this epic incites some of Shakespeare's most sensual poetry. With excellent reviews and a starry-eyed, award-winning cast  - (Tinarie van Wyk Loots (Cleopatra), André Weideman (Antony), Caesar (Andrew Laubscher), Eros (Clyde

Fokofpolisiekar at Kirstenbosch

kirstenbosch

Think summer dresses, green lawns and sunset serenades. Cape Town tradition dictates that we are, once again, in full swing of Kirstenbosch's Sunday Summer concerts. An ideal way to spend a Sunday and ease out the weekend, Summer concerts at Kirstenbosch have all the party aspects of the live gig, and all the pretty aspects of a late afternoon picnic set before Cape Town's mountainous backdrop. After last week's amazing performance by Zebra and Giraffe, this week Sunday presents a band that pioneered the face of 21st century Afrikaans Rock music. Fokofpolisiekar. The band disappeared off the scene a while to release the 2009 documentary Fokofpolisiekar, which follows the band's exploits. Thanks to the dynamic
