DJ Rene the Frenchman

DJ-Rene-at-HQ

While us over at 17onLoader (De Waterkant's premium bed and breakfast) often review back alleys and bustling venues, we don't usually take a look at the lingerers in the limelight. But recently we found ourselves beers-ing with the Frenchman that keeps HQ frantic on Fridays... DJ Rene (the Frenchman - as he is referred to) is the towering, infectiously jovial energy of a man pleased with the way his life's turned out. His bombastically beautiful grey hair bounces as he animatedly gesticulates with a wide, trusty smile. Despite having lived in South Africa for seventeen years, Rene still has the two unmistakable traits of a Frenchman - the accent, and the kind of effortless charm that could hypnotize a girl right into

The HQ review

hq

When it comes to restaurants surviving in Cape Town, HQ has the secret ingredient – it’s a place everyone absolutely wants to be seen. This single-minded concept restaurant lets you know exactly what you’re in for as you sit down – a stamp on the brown paper table cloth reads “You can have anything you like… As long as it’s salad, steak and chips”, and that is exactly how it is. The waitrons ask “how’d you like it” rather than “what would you like”, and they “it” they refer to it the sirloin steak “suicide cut”. After years of absurd ranch themes and cow-print, someone has made it possible to succumb to steak in

A great 21st birthday in Cape Town

Friday was the 21st birthday of my friend Thomas : - The last step into the adult world which has to be memorable. Thanks to Dirk who took us under his arm and showed us all the hot spots in Cape Town. We started by having a cocktail at “Carne”   http://www.carne-sa.com/ followed by an unbelievable meal there. It is an Italian modern restaurant on the street in the old building of the Law Chambers. They offer all sorts of starters like Carpaccio, ravioli, tartars but all very light so you can still have some room for the fantastic peace of meat that you have chosen has a main. When you order a lovely waitress comes to the table with a plate full of different pieces and explains to you what they are, and
