Echoer – Thoughts that count

Echoer Application for IPhone and Android

Word of mouth is said to be the most popular form of advertising, take Facebook and Twitter for example, both revolutionary concepts that have taken the world by storm, allowing you to babble about everything; how awful your day is going... someone you know through a mutual friend just got engaged in Hong Kong (you will never go to the wedding) and trillions of advertisements… the feed goes on… However, you often have to sift through the rubbish to find what you are really looking for - would you rather not be part of a community that allows you to choose whose words you wish to listen to and where they come from? Introducing Echoer… an awesome new platform for iPhone and Android. This is a social system or network which makes it

The Waterfront Wine Affair

wine22

Cape Town's been very quiet this week - we've been nursing our once-flourishing social calendars and wishing for sunburn. But what we have fast forgotten is that winter brings wine, fireplaces and excuses for shared body-heat...  Until Friday, The V&A spends the week swaying with the inebriated influence of dozens of boutique and reserve wines. With curling leaves and early evenings comes the annual V&A Wine Affair. The backdrop of a Table Mountain-marked cityscape makes The Waterfront's look out a perfect rooftop for some indulgent-out-of-doorsness.    This well-loved tasting/sipping soiree is a palate party.  Think sushi, oysters, imported cheeses and charcuterie... the menu boasts the

Music

Die Antwoord

Yolandi Vi$$er and Ninja

With no pretenses about the conviction of their message, self-named group, Die Antwoord, is an Afrikaans translation of "the answer". As of February, this fresh South African act has been "taking over the interweb". Their Enter The Ninjamusic video went web and kicked up more bandwith fuss than anything our sweet sovereign SA has seen before - making Die Antwoord a viral phenomenon so seductive that it temporarily disabled South African host Hetzner, before being taken on by the big boys at Google. With fan followings based ontwitter, myspace or facebook, and Youtube as their broadcast medium, Die Antwoord has harnessed all the heat of online campaigning to become one of South Africa's most distinct popular culture

SA cheese festival

SA Cheese festival 2010

Next weekend, the South African Cheese festival returns to us in all it's stinky goodness! In truth, I'm still not convinced that Cheese festival is a and adequate name. While I dare not blaspheme against the quality and variety of cheeses at the SA Cheese festival, the name shneakily hides the incredible array of other appetizers and palate-pamperers on show.  In the sanctuary of Simondium, somewhere between Paarl and Franschhoek, the SA Cheese festival returns to Bien Donné farm from the 24th until the 27th of April. The Cooking Pot is the cheese festival's cookery corner. By now a renowned space for innovative cheese use (no, really), The Cooking Pot is great place for gourmet gurus and closet chefs to

Two Oceans Marathon

2o1

Tomorrow (Saturday 3rd of April) brings the 2010 chapter of The Two Oceans Marathon! The Two Oceans Marathon was first run in 1970, and has been recognized as one of the world's most beautiful race routes ever since. The name tells all - runners start in Newlands, head out to Noordhoek and across Cape country. Taking on the incline of Chapman's Peak, promising a view of both the Pacific and Indian oceans. This year's race will be just as spectacular as the last, but runners should note that weather reports are partly cloudy skies, a strong southerly and a serious seventy percent humidity. The Two Oceans includes a 56km ultra marathon, the popular 21km half marathon and the 5km or 2.5km fun runs. All in all the Two

Infecting the city

Photography by Yasser Booley

If you missed the memo, on why there are pink people peculiarly standing in Greenmarket Square, or why semi-nude men seem to be emerging from Adderley Street fountains, the answer is simple - they're Infecting The City. Spier Performing Arts Festival: Infecting The City, is one Cape Town's most celebrated cultural events - a pioneer festival, showcasing performance artworks that interpret the city, within the city. Infecting The City has turned Cape Town's communal spaces into an urban performance arena. The works are performed at given times, in the open air, below the proscenium arch of the sky, and to stage left and right of traffic. Sponsored by Spier Wine Estate, Infecting the City creates a tangible hype and

Mumbo Jumbo

mumbo

I'm tired of going out only to find that I am surrounded by people there to claim "cool" rather than have a good time - so I'm hoping tonight will be nothing like that. Kids who know and love the glitchy electro-drum-bass-dub-type stuff (that is the popular genre to emerge from the gamer generation), will know that the dubstep scene has exploded in the mothercity. So for those who are looking for a tide of people kicking it to electro vibration - rather than a sea of luminous trucker caps, wife-beaters and well-dressed wall flowers - then I'm hoping Mumbo Jumbo is it. Mumbo Jumbo claims to be a gig for those who dance rather than prance. • EVERY FRIDAY @ MUMBO JUMBO BAR • 38 Shortmarket
