Frans Smit

Stellenbosch-born artist Frans Smit is making waves on the local art scene, benefitting from a fortuitous and unique experience: being mentored by the renowned British painter Lucien Freud. He was born in 1976 and studied science at Stellenbosch University for a year before switching to photography at Free State Technikon. He moved to London in 1999 and followed his true passion: art. He completed several courses at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, the City Lit College, and the prestigious St Martin's College of Art and Design. He has since moved back to Cape Town, where he lives and works, participating in numerous exhibitions across the country. Born in Johannesburg, Johan studied at the University of Pretoria where he graduated with a Degree in Information Design. During his studies, Johan was runner-up of the National SDSA/SABS design student award, and came second in the National Art of Design Competion. After spending several years in the Advertising Industry as a graphic designer, Johan became a full time artist in the late '90's. In the past decade he has participated in over 18 group exhibitions and has undertaken 5 solo exhibitions. Galleries at which he has exhibited include:- The Globe Gallery, Pretoria. Elinor studied painting at the Heatherly School of Art in London from 1965 to 1968. She has since exhibited with the Royal institute of Oil Painters at the Mall Galleries, Piccadilly, with the Royal Society of British Artists, the New English Art Club, the Chelsea Art Society, the Bath Contemporary Art Fair, and has had seven solo exhibitions in the United Kingdom. She has also participated in group exhibitions in France, namely: The Paris Salon, the Biennale Art 24, Perigueux and the Centre Culturel in Bergerac. For the past eleven years she has lived and painted in Cape Town. This is her third solo exhibition at The Cape Gallery. She paints whenever possible in front of the motif. The Cape Gallery in Cape Town recently hosted an exhibition of some of the works of Caroline van der Merwe - Caroline van der Merwe was born in Tanzania in 1932. She received her art education at the Michaelis School of Fine Art under Professor Lippy Lipschitz. Subsequently she taught sculpture in Cape Town, including to the blind. She has had many exhibitions at home and internationally, and since 1983 lives and works in Pietrasanta, Italy. She has received several awards, amongst these the Silver Medal from the University of Pretoria and first prize for sculpture from A.T.I.C.A Europremio in Pavia, Italy. In 1995 the University of Stellenbosch hosted a retrospective of her work at the Sasol Gallery. See some of her awesome
