In the aftermath of a fantastic Rugby weekend, South Africa is welling with pride. We’ve seen Heyneke Meyer’s Springboks get off to a flying start, the BabyBoks playing like demons and John Smit proudly represented at his testimonial match. But rugby is not all about tries, physical competition and success; it is also a sport that gives back to fans and less fortunate communities. This is epitomised by the initiative Out of the Closet Onto The Rugby Field.
Out of the Closet Onto The Rugby Field encourages all current and ex-rugby players to rummage through their closets and to donate their old gear to less fortunate communities. The initiative does fantastic work at schools and clubs across the Western Cape, encouraging donations at selected sports stores and distributing the wares to those in need.
With the backing of the Western Province Rugby Union and with all the generous donations received, Out of the Closet Onto The Rugby Field is a beacon of social responsibility in a nationally loved sport that promotes rugby to all, irrespective of their socio-economic context.
