Roller Derby is a ladies contact sport played by two teams of five members on old school style roller skates. Now don’t loose us with the lingo, here’s how the game goes… game play consists of a series of short matchups referred to as “jams” in which both teams nominate a scoring player called the “jammer” – this member is responsible for scoring points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer — in effect, playing both offense and defence simultaneously.
Does this tickle your skate buds? Well Cape Town has its very own Roller Derby league and anyone can join the league, but you must pass certain skills tests to be cleared for scrimmages and competition levels of play. However in order to be a playing member you must be a woman, men have roles in the League as coaches and officiators, but the current Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby standards are set for women and Mother City Mayhem are proud to have something that is for women by women without being overly girly.
The Mother City Mayhem Roller Derby league are having an open day on Monday the 22nd of October at the Sunningdale Sports Complex. If you are interested in becoming part of the mayhem hook up with the team on the Facebook page.
