Eating Out

RealRestaurantRevelations: Societi Bistro.

It was on the 30th of April 2011, it occurred between the hours of midday and 3pm, I felt like an Italian, and ate like one too (mamma mia), it was Societi Bistro‘s menu launch jol.

It was literally one of those perfect Cape Town April days, not a breath of wind, not a spurt of cloud (and consequently no rain, duh) and only the most comforting sun beaming down on Peter Weetman’s European influenced restaurant on Orange Street. Not only was I able to mingle with Cape Town’s premier socialite clique, drink outrageously more-ish (VERY more-ish) wine, but chef Stefan Marais also enticed us with platter after platter of sample dishes from the new Tour of Italy Menu. Service was slick and knowledgeable and also provided me with much needed gossip on the high flyer guests in attendance – thanks girls!!

Just to get your taste buds on overdrive, and that mouth watering:

Pancetta dumplings in a chicken broth with breadcrumb pasta and parmesan.

Bolognaise/Bolognese and sage Tortellini (home made pasta, of course)

Squid Ink Risotto with delicately pan friend calamari

…. to name but a few.

The menu is based on one that was in place last year, and works its way through the different regions in Italy pairing Italian cultivar, South African grown, wine with each week’s menu.  It is intuitive, cutting edge and top of the pile thinking from the minds of Societi Bistro’s greatest.

Each region’s menu will last a week, and runs from the 11th of May to the 20th of September. The price will be dependent on region and will be released a few days prior to the relevant week.

If you think this is amazing, try comprehending that once Italy is done and dusted, France will begin with vigour on the 21st of September. I mean, these people are on the ball, right?!

I’ll have a table every week, Societi Bistro. I mean it.

Here’s to eating. Deliciously.
