Italian Class – Caffe Milano.

 

 

South Africa, Cape Town, July 2011; Kloof Street’s Caffe Milano welcomes Italian pastry expert Andrea Lecchi to the Cape Town food scene with open arms.

With a string of positions at several high profile Michelin star restaurants in Europe and significant mentorship under some of Milan’s most famous pastry masters, Andrea Lecchi’s latest move to Cape Town is an exciting one for the country’s gourmet capital.

A welcome addition to the Caffe Milano team, Andrea will be working under executive chef Giorgio Nava in the pastry department and managing the bakery. A purist at heart, Andrea is formally trained in the art of traditional Milanese pastry, where delicately flavoured pastries, tarts, cakes and biscuits are the foundation of coffee culture and indeed daily life. “In Milan, Italy’s pastry capital, people stop in at their favourite caffe every day for a coffee, to buy bread and perhaps a little something sweet to enjoy later or maybe a small cake to take to friends or a get together”, says Giorgio Nava, Executive Chef of Caffe Milano and well known local restaurateur.

With the gleaming glass cabinets filled with his edible artworks, regulars are already ensuring they stop in as often as possible for their favourite pastry, bread and homemade biscotti fix. A love for chocolate means Andrea creates chocolate specialities often “we use Swiss chocolate which has a more subtle and less sweet flavour”, says Andrea who explains that Milanese pastries are less sugary and contain less fat than those found elsewhere in Europe. This ‘less is more’ philosophy extends to portions too, with a selection of ‘small sweet bites’ more the norm and the current Milanese trend for small cakes that are enough for two to four people now available at this chic Kloof Street stop too.

Though the painstakingly prepared Milanese pastries and artisan bread are certainly the cornerstone of this popular Cape Town café, a menu brimming with a well balanced selection of salads, sophisticated and tasty sandwich choices made on Caffe Milano’s own-baked bread has helped build a loyal following of regulars who soak up the authentic Italian atmosphere as often as possible. Lavazza coffee and a range of specially chosen teas to enjoy anytime of day, delectable breakfasts such as their famed Eggs Benedict, a variety of savoury pastries to enjoy at lunch or as a light evening meal, beautifully assembled fruit tartlets and an ever-changing host of sweet treats to enjoy there or take home to enjoy are the stalwarts at Caffe Milano, Cape Town’s own sweet slice of Italy.

About Andrea Lecchi

A born and bred Milanese, 32-year-old Andrea has worked under some of Europe’s finest chefs and Milan’s most esteemed pastry masters. An affinity for this edible art form was nurtured from his early days at hotel school and his passion has taken him to various Michelin-starred restaurants, including the famed Aimo e Nadia and Ristorante Peck. Having spent the past two years immersing himself in gaining further formal qualifications in this complex culinary sphere at various pastry institutions in Europe, Andrea is excited to be returning to the kitchen and ready to introduce Capetonians to a much loved Milanese tradition. Andrea is passionate about preserving the art of pastry making and is a champion for organic and quality ingredients.
