What sounds more deliciously cultured than picnics and Shakespeare in the park?
In a tradition that has truly stood the test of time, Antony and Cleopatra is Maynardville's 55th annual open-air Shakespeare. This drama of lust and politics is considered one of Shakespeare's most provocative and indulgent works and, despite their contextual grandeur, Shakespeare sensitively reduces them to flawed, mortal lovers of wanting contradiction. Written at the height of his literary capacity, this epic incites some of Shakespeare's most sensual poetry.
With excellent reviews and a starry-eyed, award-winning cast – (Tinarie van Wyk Loots (Cleopatra), André Weideman (Antony), Caesar (Andrew Laubscher), Eros (Clyde Berning), Sextus Pompius, a rebel (Nick Pauling) – Artscape presents an incredible addition to Maynardville's outdoor theatre ritual.
The evening invites a lazy pre-show picnic and for those wanting the magic without the mess, picnic hampers can be pre-booked from the Picnic Company (021 706 8470 or email@example.com ). A definite do for Bambi-eyed optimists already planning Valentine's Day (or the evening before – the last show).
