Part two of this week’s to-dos.
A crowded town Tuesday is evidence of an unspoken cultural agreement in the cape – a preemptive intervention approach to midweek stress. Tuesday night is time to go out in full force.
While Claremont is not for everyone, there is no surer bet for crowds and atmosphere tonight.
The Claremont strip’s favourites include Springboks, Tiger Tiger, Tin Roof, Tantra, and –new, but highly popular kid on the block – Club 91.
Tiger Tuesday’s promise free drinks ‘til ten and top of the chart tracks to get you swaying. The plush interiors of this well-designed club allow ample bar space and a sunken, dense dance-floor. Be sure to arrive collared, smart-shoed and on time – the 9-10PM line gets notoriously long.
Just a few meters away is current hot favourite, Club 91. Although Tuesday is their student night, this up-market venue, caters commercial dance to a slightly older crowd. Shots at R6, half-price cocktails and selected drinks at two-for -one, fuel the fun. The minimalist approach just means more room at the bar, and more breathing space for the beautiful. Claremont’s classier watering hole for the youthful and young professionals.
Other places to try in the area include:The laid-back Springboks pub or Tin Roof, for the much younger crowd wanting to get down and dirty; Cubana bar and lounge, for the the twenty-somethings and up, keen for a cocktail bar, hubbly or a Cuban cigar; Tantra, a more laid back approach to the club scene; or Stones, for a drink and some pool.
Keen to come as you are? Fiction student night is a good time every time. Entry is free ,with a student card, until 11PM and standard drinks are a just ten rand. The heavy bass reverberates through wooden floors heaving with Cape Town’s alternatively trendy. The night always ends up being so much more than you bargained for.
Fiction only really picks up around 11PM, but is deep set into the treasures of Long Street in any case. Catch a drink at Carnival Court while you wait – a backpacker’s bar, and the quickest way to meet Cape Town’s travelers. Carnival Court’s drinks are exceptionally reasonable and the balcony is directly opposite Fiction’s, allowing you to hydrate ’til you see the party pick up.
Tuesday is time to take to the streets and make memories someone will have to remind you of tomorrow
